Ms. Kennedy’s English I Honors Class

 Dear students and parents,

Welcome to Ms. Kennedy’s English I Honors class. I am so excited to have all of you(r) students in my classroom. In this class we will be reading and analyzing literature from all different genres. Students will have projects, presentations, and papers to complete in addition to classwork. Overall, I want your child to have fully experienced all different types of literature and improve their writing skills.

On this website I will also post any announcements that need to go home.

Outline of Class

During this class we will focus on writing and literature, specifically looking at different genres. We will have vocabulary every week and daily grammar practice (dgp). By the end of the semester, your students will be able to complete basic essays, a book project, and other smaller assignments.

Classroom Rules

1. The students will respect each other, the teacher, any visitors, and the surroundings in the classroom.

2. Be on time, on task, and prepared every day.

3. Follow directions the first time they are given.

4. Be responsible and accountable for your own learning and actions.

5. No food or drink in the classroom.

Attendance and Make up Work

It is extremely important that your student attends class every day. If the student knows they are going to be absent, they are able to get their work ahead of time. It is the STUDENTS responsibility to get the work that they missed while they were out.

If a student is absent for any reason, they will have two days to make up work from the date they return. Extended absences will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Missing work can be located in the period folders. All large assignments missed must be made up. You will need to schedule a time with me to make up an assignment. Sporting events do not excuse you from the work that you missed.

If a student has more than 6 absences in a class, then that student will not receive credit for the class. To help ensure that students receive credit for their classes, Southern Wayne High School is conducting a program entitled AIM where students can make up the missed time. Students are able to stay after school or come in on Saturdays to complete the same amount of hours they have missed in class. The after school hours will be from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. and will count towards one class made up. The Saturday hours will be from 9:00-12:00 p.m. and 1:00 -4:00 p.m. The student can stay for one session or come to both. If they stay all day, then they will have made up on complete school day. It is up to the student and the parent to provide transportation for these make-up sessions.


Plagiarism is defined as using someone else’s work and putting your name on it. There is a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism in this class. This includes cheating and copying off of someone else’s paper. If a student is caught plagiarizing, they will receive a zero. If they were copying from someone else’s paper, both students will receive a zero on that assignment.

Progress Reports

Progress reports will be sent home about every 3 weeks. The students will have this opportunity to turn in any classwork or homework that they have missed or not turned in. If the student does not turn in the work during that progress report period, the student will be given a zero.


Classwork/ Homework/ Journals: 30%

Quizzes: 30%

Test/ Papers/ Projects: 40%

*The final grades will be calculated using the two nine-week grades (worth 37.5% each) and the NC Final Exam grade (worth 25%).


In this class we use technology to benefit our learning. This means that there are times where it is appropriate to use cell phones. This does not however mean that students are allowed to have them out all of the time. Students are not able to charge their phones in class, answer phone calls, or answer face-time calls.
