English I Requirements

English I- Standard & Honors
Honors will do more projects and in-depth analysis of reading through questions and discussion. They will also move a much quicker pace and cover harder material.

Standard- Students will receive 10 words on Monday and test on Friday.
Honors- Students will receive 20 words on Monday and test on Friday.
All students will complete varying assignments using these words throughout the week to learn how to use the words in context.

-MUG Shots- Mechanics, Usage, Grammar shots will be used every Tuesday and Thursday. Students will use these to learn how to correct errors in their writing and peer editing skills.
-Daily Grammar Practice- DGP will be used everyday in class. This will teach and review: parts of speech, parts of a sentence, clauses, sentence types, punctuation, capitalization, and diagramming.
-Grammar Rules- Commas, colons, semi-colons, capitalization.

Literary Terms
Students will learn these also throughout the semester during various pieces of literature.  Every Wednesday the class will review different literary terms. Students will also be assessed on these terms.

Students will read and analyze various poems. They will also create their own poems.

Short Stories
Students will read and analyze various short stories. These will be taught throughout the semester.  We will work on the genres on: fiction, non-fiction (including biographies & autobiographies), fantasy, adventure, & historical fiction.

The Odyssey

Independent Reading
Students will read independent novels from the library throughout the semester.  They will have projects to do on these independent readings.

Students will complete various writing assignments throughout the semester as determined by WCPS.
